SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Wildcats are gaining steam.

Riding back-to-back complete-game shutouts, the Weber State University softball team swept through the opening day of the Santa Clara Invitational on Friday at Santa Clara Softball Stadium.

Weber State opened the day with a 4-0 win over the University of Illinois at Chicago, and then rolled to a 9-0 win in five innings against host Santa Clara in the nightcap.

The win over the Broncos was the 100th win for Wildcat head coach Mary Kay Amicone at Weber State, and was the Wildcats third consecutive victory. Amicone is 100-70-1 in three-plus seasons as the Wildcats’ head coach.

Junior right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling had six strikeouts and scattered six hits in the win over the Flames, while sophomore right-hander Tatiana Su’esu’e held the Broncos to just one hit in five innings, needing just 69 pitches to get the requisite 15 outs.

Freshman outfielder Landi Hawker had a strong day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman outfielder Takesha Saltern was 3-of-6 with an RBI single, and freshman shortstop Sydney White was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and four runs scored.

Against the Broncos, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on a Bronco error in the first inning, and then broke things open in the second after senior Mackenzi Corta led off with a single. Corta scored on wild pitch. Saltern singled through the right side to make it 3-0, and WSU added two more runs on another Santa Clara error to make it 5-0 after two.

Sydney White’s RBI double in the third made it 6-0, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before stealing home to make it 7-0.

Hawker hit an RBI single in the fifth that made it 8-0, the Wildcats added a final run on another Bronco error in the fifth, and Su’esu’e and the Wildcat defense closed things down in the fifth for the win.

Against the Flames, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in third on a bases sacrifice fly by Sara Hingsberger for the only run of the first five innings.

Junior catcher Molly Horne doubled to lead off the sixth, and senior Katelyn Robinson, pinch running for Horne, stole home to make it 2-0. An RBI single by junior second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff made it 3-0, and the Wildcats scored on a Flames’ error to make it 4-0, and Weber State ended the game on a 6-4-3 double play in the seventh.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday against South Dakota at 10 a.m. MT (9 a.m. Pacific), and then will face Creighton at 12:30 p.m. MT., before wrapping up the three-day tournament with a re-match against UIC on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. MT.
