Weber State drops road game 77-66 at BYU

PROVO - Weber State lost 77-66 to BYU Wednesday night at the Marriott Center as the Wildcats struggled from the free throw line and 3-point line.

Weber State was 11 of 26 from the line and was 5 for 24 from 3-point range.

“The story of the game was missed free throws,” said Weber State head coach Randy Rahe. “We played the way we wanted to tonight and we gave ourselves a chance to be in position at the end. We battled but the missed free throws was the difference.”

BYU broke a 22-22 tie and closed the first half on a 15-6 run and took a 37-28 lead at halftime. The Wildcats went on a 19-10 run to start the second half and tied the game at 47-47 with 12:39 to play. BYU led 53-51 with 9:46 to play when the Cougars went on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes and the Wildcats were never closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Sophomore Zach Braxton led the way for Weber State with career-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds for his first career double-double. Braxton fouled out of the game with 6:28 to play after picking up five fouls in the second half.

Ryan Richardson started the game for the first time this season and finished with a season-high 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. Jeremy Senglin added 12 points and a team-high four assists.

BYU was second in the nation in rebounding entering the game and outrebounded the Wildcats 41-36. The Cougars shot 47 percent from the field, compared to 43 percent for the Wildcats. Eric Mika led the Cougars with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats have lost 14-straight to BYU and are 0-21 in the Marriott Center.

Weber State (2-6) returns to action Saturday night hosting West Coast Baptist at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
