OGDEN – Weber State volleyball battled to a 3-1 win over Idaho Thursday night with three Wildcats ending the night with double figure kills.
“I’m really proud with how physically hard we played,” head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. “I think when we can start matching our physical effort with our mental effort we’ll find a more consistent way of playing volleyball.”
The Wildcats and the Vandals started the first set off going point for point and a tied score at 14-14. Weber State then went on a 7-1 run giving them a 21-15 lead over Idaho. WSU finished the first set with a big block from Megan Thompson and Amanda Varley for a 25-21 score.
The Vandals got the early jump on the Wildcats with a 7-5 lead in the second set but the ‘Cats tied things back up at 12-12 and later went on an 8-1 run giving them a 20-13 lead. The Vandals answered with a 5-0 run that wasn't quite enough to shift the momentum in their favor. Idaho tried to make a comeback but another block by Thompson and Andrea Hale gave WSU the second set 25-22 win.
Weber State had the 2-0 advantage going into the third set.
The two teams were tied at 9-9 early in the third set but Idaho went on a 6-1 run giving them a 15-10 lead over the Wildcats. A Vandal Attack error and a kill by Thompson turned the momentum back to the Wildcats as they answered with a 6-0 run and a 16-15 lead. It was a back and forth battle to the end of the game but the Vandals came out victorious with a 25-20 third set win.
Weber State had a 12-9 lead over Idaho but the Vandals had a 6-0 push half way through the fourth set but it wasn’t enough to claim a lead and then WSU answered with a 4-0 run. Idaho tied the score up late in the game at 20-20.
Ciera Borho stepped up huge for WSU in the fourth game as she came in and contributed five kills and finished off the fourth set with a fire kill for set point to win the entire match for the Wildcats. The fourth game ended with a 25-23 score. WSU downed Idaho with a final score of 3-1.
Weber State had three Wildcats in double figure kills. Hale and Thompson tied for the match high with 14 kills each. Amanda Varley also added 13 kills off of 37 attacks.
Thompson had an impressive .480 percentage off of 25 attacks. Ciera Borho had the game high percentage with five kills off six attacks and no errors for .833 percentage. Taylor Christensen-Kinikini also put up an impressive offensive number with 44 assts.
Defensively Thamires Cavalcanti had 13 digs and Thompson had eight blocks.
Weber State ended the night with 51 kills off of 125 attacks for a .224 percentage. Idaho ended the night with 53 kills off of 124 attacks for a .218 percentage. The Vandals had 48 digs to the Wildcats 35 while WSU had 14 team blocks to Idaho’s 11.
Weber State is now 13-3 overall on the season and 4-3 in Big Sky Conference play. They will hit the road to take on Idaho State Saturday at 7:00 p.m. before returning home to host North Dakota and Northern Colorado.
