CEDAR CITY, Utah – Weber State volleyball competed in it's first five set match of the year and came out victorious over Southern Utah. This is the first time the Wildcats have ever won a match in Cedar City against SUU. 

"First off, hats off to Southern Utah," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "They were relentless all night long. I was happy with the way we kept figting in a hostile environment. We are going to take what we learned tonight about ourselves and make the necessary changes as we continue through the process."

In the first set of the match the Thunderbirds got the jump on the Wildcats starting off with a 13-9 lead. WSU tied the game at 18-18 but SUU went on a 5-2 run giving them a 23-20 lead. Weber State decided to kick in a comeback going on an 8-3 run. Amanda Varley had two kills that gave the Wildcats the momentum they needed to finish out the set strong.

A big block by Aubrey Saunders and Rylin Roberts tied the set at 24-24. A kill by Megan Thompson and another by Roberts gave the Wildcats a 27-26 edge over SUU. To finish off Weber State’s set winning run Thompson and Megan Gneiting had a block that clutched WSU’s 28-26 first set win.

Weber State started off the second set with a 14-4 lead and never looked back. The T-Birds surged for a comeback but fell short as the Wildcats answered with a 9-3 run giving them the 25-13 second set win and the 2-0 overall advantage going into the break.

The T-Birds went on a 7-1 run early in the third set but WSU tied things back up at 12-12. The T-Birds kept pushing and forged an 18-24 lead. Weber State then went on a 6-0 run tying the match at 24-24. SUU had a kill and an ace to give the T-Birds the 26-24 set three win forcing the match into the fourth set.

The score was tied at 20-20 in the fourth set and the Thunderbirds finished with a 5-1 run claiming the fourth set 25-21 forcing the match to go into a fifth and final set. The first time this season the Wildcats played a fifth set.

In the fifth set, Weber State got a 10-7 jump on the Southern Utah. The Wildcats finished the match with a kill by Varley and a block by Saunders and Andrea Hale giving WSU the 3-2 overall match win over SUU.

Weber State had four Wildcats with double figure kills. WSU was led by Hale who had 14 kills off 31 attacks for a .290 percentage on the night. Roberts added 12 kills and Varley added 11. Thompson also had another impressive night with a double double having 11 kills and 10 blocks.

Bailey Irwin had a new career high with 52 assists on the night and added eight digs. Jesse Hover had 21 digs on the night and Saunders added seven blocks for WSU.

Overall WSU had 63 kills off of 180 attacks for a .178 percentage on the night. The Wildcats also had 59 digs and 35 total blocks and 18 team blocks.  Southern Utah had 56 kills off of 174 attacks for a .121 percentage. SUU had 66 digs and 19 overall blocks with 10 team blocks.

Weber State is now 11-1 overall on the season and 2-1 in Big Sky Conference play. They will take on Northern Arizona on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. You can watch Saturday’s game on WatchBigSky.coma and follow live stats at WeberStateSports.com.
