Now in his fifth year on the staff, MATT HAMMER retains the title of Assistant Head Coach which was given him in the Spring of 2009, but now assumes the role of Offensive Coordinator as well. After a successful three-year stint coaching the running backs, Hammer will now oversee the wide receivers. Hammer was instrumental in the development of running back Trevyn Smith. Smith became the first player in Weber State history to rush for 1,000 yards or more, four years in a row. He amasses over 5,000 career rushing yards and was the Big Sky Conference Rushing leader in 2006, and in 2007 and 2008 under the gaze of Hammer. Smith became just the third player in Big Sky Conference history to be name First Team four years in a row. Hammer also coached fullback Marcus Mailei who was a two-time All-Big Sky First Team member and is now with the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. Last year, Hammer brought along red-shirt freshman fullback, Bo Bolen, and helped him attain All-Big Sky and Second Team All-America honors. Bolen rushed 88 times for 442 yards and three touchdowns. Many of the current Wildcats were brought to Ogden under Hammer, who served as the staff Recruiting Coordinator for three seasons. Hammer joined the Wildcat staff in the Spring of 2006 after finishing up his undergraduate studies at Southern Utah University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Educations with a minor in Criminal Justice. During the 2006 season, Hammer assisted Coach Kevin Clune, working with the linebackers as a graduate assistant before being elevated to full-time status in 2007. Hammer played both receiver and defensive back at SUU under coaches Ray Gregory, current Utah State head coach, Gary Anderson, and Wes Meier in his four seasons at SUU. Hammer was a standout prep star at Clearfield High under Coach Randy Johnson. He earned two varsity letters in football and three in baseball. Married, his wife’s name is Sheena. They have a son, Jagger (3) and a daughter, Skylee, who will turn one in October.
