SALT LAKE CITY – Weber State had their last in-state battle of 2016 against the University of Utah Saturday afternoon and fell 71-52.
After the first quarter the Wildcats trailed 20-8, but Weber State went on a 6-0 run and held the Utes scoreless for the first two minutes. Late in the second quarter the Utes were on a three minute scoring drought and the Wildcats brought the score to 25-21.
With 2:28 left in the first half Dominique Williams drained one from beyond the arc to bring the score to 27-24. Another drained three by Kailie Quinn tied the game up at 27-27 with 1:32 on the clock. The Utes managed to gain a little footing and claimed a 31-28 lead going into halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive battle between the Utes and Wildcats. In the first six minutes the Utes only scored six points and the Wildcats only scored three making it 37-31. By the end of the third quarter, Utah had 44-35 lead over the Wildcats. WSU only scored seven points in the third quarter.
Weber State couldn’t gain any momentum or find any solid footing in the fourth quarter as WSU fell to Utah with a final score of 71-52.
For the tenth game this season Emily Drake scored in double figures for Weber State with the game high of 12 points including three from beyond the arc. Deeshyra Thomas also had double figures for the Wildcats with 10. Thomas was also the top rebounder for the Wildcats with seven on the night. Thomas also had a new season high with her four steals.
For the stat breakdown of the night Weber State shot 17-61 from the field, 7-20 from the three and 11-20 from the free throw line. Utah shot 27-65 from the field, 5-16 from the three and 12-15 from the free throw line. Utah outrebounded WSU 56-32. Weber State only had 13 turnovers to Utah’s 21. WSU also had 11 steals on the game.
Weber State is now 6-4 on the season. The Wildcats will return home to host its annual Field Trip day Monday, Dec. 19 against Fresno State. Big Sky Conference play starts Dec. 29 at the Dee Events Center against Montana State.
