Wildcats to host Portland Saturday

TIP OFF

  The Wildcats continue the 2016-17 season with a home game against University of Portland Dec. 3 at 2:00 p.m.

  WSU has a 5-1 overall record on the season and are tied at No. 1 in the Big Sky standings.

  Weber State played in the Florida International Thanksgiving Tournament where they defeated host FIU 64-61 in overtime and fell to Stetson University 70-68 in overtime. 

  With the win over Florida International the Wildcats posted a 5-0 record making it the best start to any season in Wildcat history.

DRAKE’S CONSISTENT DOUBLE DIGITS
Sophomore Emily Drake has been a force to be reckoned with so far this season.  She started the year off tying her career high with 17 points against Cal State San Bernardino and has continued to score in double digits in all six games. Against Westminster, Drake dropped 25 points for a new career. She sank five from beyond the arc for a career high in three point field goals made. In the Florida International tournament Drake scored 11 points in each game. She 90 total points so far this season and is averaging 15 points per game. She sits at No. 6 in the Big Sky in scoring. 

ADAMS CAREER HIGH BOARDS
Jocelyn Adams was named to the Florida International All-Tournament team this weekend. Adams crashed the boards and pulled down a new career high of 14 rebounds against Stetson and she put up her first career double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Florida International. 

THOMAS AND ADAMS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Jocelyn Adams was named to the Florida International All-Tournament team this weekend for her efforts on the boards.  Adams pulled down a new career high of 14 rebounds against Stetson and she put up her first career double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Florida International. She averaged 12 rebounds a game in the tournament. 

Deeshyra Thomas had a stand out performance against Stetson in the weekend earning her the All-Tournament honors as well. She dropped 21 points against the hatters and made the last second jumper to force the game into overtime. Thomas also averaged four assists per game. 

SERIES HISTORY  -  PORTLAND
This will be the 10th meeting between Weber State and Portland. The Wildcats lead the series with a 7-2 record and are currently on a six game winning streak. The last time Weber State took down Portland at home was in 2002. WSU is looking to maintain their winning streak by picking up a seventh. 

LAST TIME  -  PORTLAND
The last time the two teams matched up was last year at Portland, the Wildcats picked up a 57-55 victory. 

ABOUT - PORTLAND
Portland is coming off a 79-68 win over Portland State. They currently have a 2-5 record.  The Pilots average 58.3 points per game and are shooting .357 from the field, .295 from the three and .664 from the free throw line. Portland averages 37.6 rebounds per game. 

Portland is led by Darian Slaga who averages 11.4 points per game. She is shooting .410 from the field and .375 from the three and .840 from the free throw line.  Julie Spencer is the top rebounder for the Pilots, averaging 7.7 rebounds per game and pulling down 54 total on the year so far. She also averages 8.9 points a game. 

MEET THE WILDCATS
The Wildcats return five letter winners off last year’s squad with one senior in Deeshyra Thomas who is the teams top returning scorer. There are two juniors returning this year with Kailie Quinn who was the third best scorer last season and Joceyln Adams. There is one new junior to the program this year a junior college transfer Audrey Frison

There are four sophomores returning this year in J’aiamoni Welch-Coleman, Yarden Danan, Emily Drake and Tyschal Blake

The Wildcats welcome five new freshman this year. Guards Zharia Hale and Payton Whitmore, shooter Danielle Craft and post players Dominqiue Williams and Gina O’Brien are expected to step up big for the Wildcat program this year.
