RENO, Nev. - Weber State never trailed as the Wildcats opened the Big Sky Tournament with a 90-70 win over Southern Utah Thursday night at the Reno Events Center.
The Wildcats advance to play the No. 2 seed Eastern Washington Friday night at 8 pm. Pacific time (9 p.m. MST) in the semifinals of the tournament in Reno.
Weber State shot 61 percent from the field, their best shooting percentage against a Division I opponent this season. WSU started the game making 17 of its first 21 shots from the field, including 8-of-10 from 3-point land. WSU led 44-38 at halftime.
Southern Utah stayed in the game and got as close as one point early in the second half. WSU led by four with 14:15 to play when the ‘Cats went on an 18-6 run to blow the game open. SUU was never closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
“I was really proud of our team and the effort tonight,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “We knew it was going to be a battle. We didn’t guard very well in the first half but did better in the second half and played well offensively.”
WSU finished the game 29-of-47 from the field for 61.7 percent and was 11-of-19 from 3-point range. Weber State also outrebounded the Thunderbirds 29-28.
Senior Jeremy Senglin once again led Weber State as he finished with 24 points. Senglin was 8-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Senglin became the career leader for 3-pointers in the Big Sky Tournament.
He now has 1,982 career points and needs 38 more points to pass Bruce Collins and become Weber State’s all-time leading scorer.
Three other Wildcats scored in double figures with Zach Braxton added 15 points and four rebounds and Dusty Baker with 15 off the bench. Jerrick Harding started his second-straight game and added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
