WSU cross country opens season at BYU meet

The Weber State men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2016 season Saturday morning in a dual meet at the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo.

On the women’s side, the Wildcats scored 40 points, behind BYU’s 19 points. Senior Hailey Whetten was Weber State’s top runner and came in second overall with a time of 17:29.1 on the three-mile course. Senior Ellie Child was seventh overall at 18:00.7 with junior Paige Dilmore right behind in eighth place with a time of 18:01.8.

Alice Neville finished 12th overall, posting a time of 18:17.0 with sophomore Summer Harper taking 14th overall at 18:22.0. Freshmen Maddie Ball and Michalya Miller were WSU’s next finishers.

In the men’s race, BYU outscored Weber State 16-46. WSU’s top runner was freshman Dallin Leatham who finished sixth overall in his first collegiate race with a time of 20:31.7 on the four-mile course. Juinor Jordan Cross was 10th at 20:42.1 with senior Jason Kearns taking 17th at 21:00.9. Preston Johnson was 18th, with Braden Perry taking 19th and Joe Maloney finishing 20th.

The Wildcats will next be in action at the Montana State Invitational Sept. 17 in Bozeman.
