OGDEN, Utah -- The Big Sky Conference released its tennis Players of the Week on Tuesday, with Weber State sophomore Sanjay Goswami earning a share of the men's honor with Montana State's Niklas Brandes.
Goswami won three singles matches and one doubles match to lead Weber State to a 2-2 record last week that included Big Sky wins over Sacramento State and Montana State to help the Wildcats remain unbeaten in conference matches at 7-0. The two conference wins also helped the Wildcats become the only team to clinch a spot in the 2014 Big Sky tennis championship.
Goswami won in both doubles and singles as the Wildcats defeated Sacramento State 5-2 in Sacramento on Thursday. He teamed with Oliver Good to defeat the Hornets’ No. 1 team of Niranjan Ram and Roy Brandes 8-2 to lead a Weber State sweep of the doubles matches. He then returned in singles to score a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Alejandro Villarreal in the No. 6 match.
Goswami added a singles win on Saturday for one of two Weber State points in a 5-2 loss to a strong Loyola Marymount squad as he defeated Luke Bohuslav 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 5 match.
On Sunday, Goswami finished off his strong week of singles play, recording a crucial point to help Weber State rally in singles after dropping the doubles point for a 4-3 win over Montana State. In the No. 6 match, he defeated the Bobcats’ Kenny Dodd 6-3, 6-0.
Goswami has won seven of his last 9 singles matches and is a perfect 6-0 in conference singles matches.
Niklas Brandes, a junior from Nordenham, Germany, went undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles against conference opponents Idaho State and Weber State and helped Montana State go 1-1 over the weekend for his share of the weekly award.
