The Weber State women’s basketball team opens its season with an exhibition game against Adams State on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
The Wildcats will be welcoming back 11 players from the 2012-13 team, including all five of their starters. Five of the six top scorers for the Cats are also returning for the 2013-14 season.
“We are excited to get back into playing someone else,” head coach Bethann Ord said. “It has been a couple of weeks since we’ve even been in a scrimmage-type of setting and obviously almost a year since we’ve played someone else.”
One newcomer who a lot of Wildcat fans have their eyes on is transfer Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin. Martin transferred to Weber State from St. Johns where she played in a NCAA Sweet Sixteen with the Red Storm.
“You’ll see a lot of energy out of Z,” Ord said. “It’s very helpful to have a player who has played in a sweet sixteen.”
Coach Ord and some of the players will be giving out candy for the Halloween afternoon game and anyone wearing a Halloween costume will get into the game for free.
The Wildcats season officially starts on Friday, November 8, when Walla Walla comes to Ogden for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
