MISSOULA, Mont. - Weber State opened the Big Sky Tournament with an 81-58 win over Northern Arizona Thursday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena. The win is the 12th straight for Weber State, now tied for the third longest winning streak in the nation, and moves the Wildcats into the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday. The Wildcats will meet North Dakota Friday at 5:30 p.m.
For the seventh time this season the Wildcats never trailed in the game and jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead early on. The Lumberjacks were never closer than six points the rest of the half and WSU held a 36-21 lead at halftime.
Weber State maintained control in the second half and led by as many as 23 points. The lead was never less than 14 points.
For the game the Wildcats shot 53.6 percent from the field and held NAU to 37 percent shooting. The 'Cats were 5-16 from three-point range. WSU came into the game leading the nation in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage defense.
Weber State also outrebounded NAU 36-27 and had 15 turnovers, nine steals and seven blocked shots.
"I thought our team was really focused today and it showed in how we played," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "We were ready to play and paid attention to our game plan and executed on both ends of the floor. This is just step one and we have to be ready to go again tomorrow."
Senior Frank Otis four Wildcats in double figures, finishing with 16 points on 7-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Davion Berry had 13 points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
Kyle Tresnak added 12 points and six rebounds, along with three blocked shots. Scott Bamforth had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman Joel Bolomboy came off the bench with nine points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
With the win the 'Cats improve to 25-5 on the season, picking up 25 wins for the second-straight season and the seventh time in school history.
The 'Cats have now won 11 straight against Northern Arizona and improves to 16-3 all-time in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Tournament.
WSU will play North Dakota in the semifinals Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Missoula. UND defeated Southern Utah 69-52 in the semifinals Thursday.
