OGDEN, Utah - The Weber State University women's volleyball team officially kicks off its 2012 season on Wednesday morning with the Wildcats first practice of the year.
"Everyone is excited to get started," said Weber State coach Tom Peterson, who is beginning his second season at the Wildcats' help. "I believe we have the makings of a very good group."
Weber State opens up the new season with a lot of new faces, with just six returners back from last season.
Leading the way among the returners are senior setter Caitlin Penrod, senior middle blocker Dama Cox - the 2011 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year, junior outside hitter Briana Wilms, and junior outside hitter Shanae (Langston) Burgin.
The Wildcats welcome seven newcomers, including four transfers, two redshirt-freshmen, and a true freshman.
"We're going to be young this year, but we're more athletic and more physical," Peterson said. "I think we have a chance to surprise a lot of people."
The Wildcats will hold their first practice at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Swenson Gym.
Weber State will open up its 2012 schedule on Aug. 24 against the University of Portland in Logan, Utah.
