Takesha Saltern was 4-for-6 with four runs scored in the Wildcats' doubleheader sweep Friday.

OGDEN – It was a hot day at the plate for the Wildcats.

Riding 25 hits and 19 runs, the Weber State University softball team opened up its Big Sky Conference series with Portland State with a doubleheader sweep, as the Wildcats defeated the Vikings 13-0 in five innings to open the series and then took a 6-1 in the second game at Wildcat Softball Complex.

Weber State improved to 7-3 in Big Sky play (23-13-1 overall) and remained one-half game behind Montana in the league standings. Portland State fell to 4-7 in Big Sky play, 6-27 overall.

“I’m really happy about our adjustments, both offensively and defensively today,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “We really played Wildcat softball today. I loved our energy and focus.”

Freshman right fielder Takesha Saltern had four of those hits for the Wildcats, also reaching on walk, and scored four runs on the afternoon.

Freshman center fielder Landi Hawker had two hits in each game and three RBI, while senior first baseman Sara Hingsberger was 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Junior right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling earned her 13th win in the opening game, allowing just five hits with no walks against four strikeouts. It was Bohling’s fifth complete-game shutout of the season. Sophomore right-hander Tatiana Su'esu'e picked up her 10th win in the second game, allowing four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts.

After dodging an early push by the Vikings, the Wildcats rang up a 4-0 first-inning lead behind a two RBI double from junior catcher Molly Horne and a two RBI triple from senior third baseman KyRae Kogianes.

An RBI single from Hingsberger and a two RBI double from Riana Splinter in the second inning made it 7-0 at the end of two, and a two RBI triple from Hingsberger in the third made it 9-0. An RBI single by Kogianes, an RBI single from freshman shortstop Sydney White, and a two RBI single from Hawker made it 13-0 and the Wildcats put the Vikings down in order in the fifth to close off the game.

Portland State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on a Wildcat error, but an RBI triple from Hingsberger, an RBI double from Horne, and RBI single from Splinter put Weber State on top 3-1 at the end of the inning.

Hawker’s RBI single in the second inning made it 4-1, and a sacrifice fly from Horne gave the Wildcats a 5-1 lead after two innings.

Katelyn Robinson scored the final run of the game for the Wildcats in the sixth inning, forcing a Viking error while stealing third base, to make it 6-1.

Weber State and Portland State will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday at Wildcat Softball Complex. First pitch is set for Noon.
