Wildcat track posts strong marks at MSU meet

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Wildcats keep grinding away.

The Weber State University men’s and women’s track team saw some nice improvements in all three areas during their fourth weekend of competition at the Bozeman Running Company Dual Meet Invitational at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Senior Tawnie Moore turned in a career-best 25.49 in the 200 meter dash and a season-best 8.49 in the 60-meter hurdles, which is the best time in the Big Sky Conference this season.

In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, the Wildcats turned in a 1-2-3 performance as Ryan Carlson won the race with a time of 8.29, followed by Joey Czellecz with an 8.30, and Tyler Kendell was third at 8.49.

“We had nice improvements from all three areas: sprints/hurdles, distances, and field events,” Weber State Director of Track and Field Dan Walker said. “We just need to keep grinding as we move toward the championship at the end of February.”

Natasha Powell hit 60 feet, 10 3/4 inches in the weight throw, beating her previous season best by more than eight inches, to win the event, and also won the shot put at 43 feet, eight inches. Terrell Womack was second in the shot.

Garazi Larrakoetxea had won the triple jump at 36 feet, 5 1/2 inches and won the high jump at five feet, 8 3/4 inches, which is the second-best mark in the Big Sky this season by 1/2 inch. Abbi Brecht and Annie Watts tied for second in the high jump at five feet, five inches.

Talia Reza won the long jump at 18 feet, 1/4 inch, her top mark of the season.

Lexie Green finished second in the 5,000 meters, and Ashlynn Allred finished second in the 60 meters at 7.86.

The Wildcats’ 4x400 relay, consisting of Jordyn Johnson, Jacque Steckler, Brenna Jeffs, and Michaella Hintze, also finished second.

On the men’s side, Elias Miller finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.10, while Cody Glad was second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:33.55.

Weber State also finished second in the 4x400 relay, with the team of Joey Czellecz, Bren Durfee, Josh Hartford, and Daunte Atkinson, finishing at 3:21.22.

Logan Leavitt was second in the long jump at 22 feet, 5 1/4 inches, and Trey Deveraux was second in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Nathan Dunivan finished second in the shot (51 feet, 9 3/4 inches) and weight throw (56 feet, eight inches).

Brendan Shelley reached 15 feet, five inches in the Pole Vault, equaling the top mark for the meet.

Weber State will be back in action next week at the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, Idaho, with a small contingent heading to the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
